May 9

Today was another big for us, Aaron had a second MRI. At this point, surgery in July is a definite, and Aaron’s doctor wants to make sure that his spinal cord is healthy like it was for his first MRI last year. Everything is expected to check out just fine, but it is still a long and stressful experience for all because he has to be sedated. He is a little congested today and that made the process much harder. He had to be given even more medicine than last time, which was upsetting because last time he had a very hard time coming out of anesthesia. This time he was given a whole lot of extra fluids before and after the MRI and we decided we would let him sleep it off there for 3 hours instead of 1.

He was a brave boy getting his IV because his vein rolled away from the needle when they inserted it so they were digging around in his arm a little and it hurt him a lot. Although he wailed, he held still and did a great job. We just love the nurses in Pediatric Sedation at Walter Reed. They are amazing. They even gave Baby Simba a little IV of his own which Aaron kept on him until the next day.

The MRI was shorter than last time and we let him sleep for quite a while. Here he is back up on the ward right after his MRI, and a little later, totally unresponsive to our first attempts to wake him up.

Finally we got him awake and talking, he had some juice and went to the bathroom, so we headed home. Like last time, he slept for most of the evening and through the night. He did do a better job this time of recovering more quickly though, and didn’t have wobbly legs when he woke up.
